SHOP BY ERA The 1940’s – The War Years

This was a significant era for British fashion. Swing music was fashionable and reflected the way people dressed. This decades fashions were also heavily influenced by World War II. As clothes became scarce, rationed and regulated by government design, the ability to assert individuality and style became increasingly difficult. With limited access to new clothing the British population were forced to "Make do and mend" the items they already owned. Short haircuts of the 1930’s gave way to the popularity of shoulder length, or a bit longer hair. Shoe designs were chunky and solid, with wedges or low 2" heels. Open toe shoes were banned as impractical and unsafe. Men's shoes adhered to the usual formula of hard wearing Oxfords or Brogued lace-ups.
