SHOP BY ERA The 1970’s – Glam rocks!

Mini-skirts were at their height in popularity, joined by Maxi dresses. Velvet, Flares and Platforms. A decade characterised by tight fitting tops and loose bottoms made from velvet and denims. The hippie look of the sixties was carried through with frayed jeans and tie dye still being popular.

Punk first emerged in the mid 1970s in London as an anarchic and aggressive movement. About 200 young people defined themselves as an anti-fashion urban youth street culture. Closely aligned was a music movement that took the name punk.

1970's punk was seen largely as a backlash against glam rock and the socio-political climate in the UK. Designers Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren were pioneers of 70's alternative fashion.

Punk was a reaction against all things Hippie: long hair, love of nature, love of everybody, peace. Punk was the most shocking youth movement the world had ever seen: loud, angry, spitting, universal disgust. It was also a reaction against a huge rise in unemployment and inflation.
