Woolworths opened in 1909. Everything was priced at sixpence.
That store in Liverpool was called FW Woolworths, a subsidiary of the US parent which was started in 1879 when Frank Woolworth, a sales assistant, opened a shop in Pennsylvania.
He had a great affection for England and believed his formula, known as the "five and ten" - everything priced at five or 10 cents - would work across the Atlantic.. By the mid-1920s Woolworths was inundated with letters from local authorities, asking them to open in their town. At one point a new store was emerging every 17 days.

Woolworths became synonymous with pick'n'mix sweets and came to be relied upon by shoppers for anything from stationery to garden furniture at reasonable prices.
Woolies, as it was universally known, eventually came under British ownership in 1982. The growth and expansion of the company contributed to its downfall.
On November 26, 2008 Woolworths Group plc announced that they were in too much debt to maintain their outgoing payments. The remaining British Woolworths stores closed by January 6, 2009, with the loss of almost 30,000 jobs.
